Elementary speech
The role of the speech-language pathologist in the school setting is to evaluate and treat children who have difficulty in one or more areas of communication. These areas may include: speech sounds (articulation) - how to produce sounds and put them together in words; language - understanding vocabulary concepts, finding the right words, or organizing words in a meaningful way to convey a message or hold a conversation; stuttering - how well speech flows; and cognitive communication - problems with memory and problem solving. The SLP collaborates with the special education team to determine if a child is eligible for services and to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to address each child’s specific needs.
