Think like a Reading Expert!
 
Monroeville Elementary Gifted Readers should come to class prepared to learn in two ways:
 
A. Students will show growth and achieve mastery over Ohio's College and Career Readiness Standards.
 
   1. Demonstrate independence
 
   2. Build strong content knowledge
 
   3. Respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose and discipline
 
   4. Comprehend as well as critique
 
   5. Value Evidence
 
   6. Use technology and digital media strategically and capably
 
   7. Come to understand other perspectives and cultures

5th Grade I CAN Statements:
 
Literature: Key Ideas & Details, Craft & Structure, Integration of Knowledge & Ideas and Range of Reading & Complexity of Text
5 RL 1 - I can quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says and when drawing inferences from the text.
5 RL 2 - I can determine a theme of a story, drama or poem from details in the text, and I can summarize the text.
5 RL 3 - I can compare and contrast two or more characters, settings or events in a story or drama.
5 RL 4 - I can determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.
5 RL 5 - I can explain how a series of chapters, scenes or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a story, drama or poem.
5 RL 6 - I can describe how a narrator or speaker's point of view influences how events are described.
5 RL 7 - I can analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text.

5 RI 1 - I can quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text states and what inferences I can draw from it.
5 RI 2 - I can determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details, and I can summarize the text.
5 RI 3 - I can explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text.
5 RI 4 - I can determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a fifth grade topic or subject area.
5 RI 5 - I can compare and contrast the overall structure of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts.
5 RI 6 - I can analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting similarities and differences in the point of view they represent.
5 RI 7 - I can draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, showing that I can find an answer to a question quickly or solve a problem efficiently.
5 RI 8 - I can explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support points in a text.
5 RI 9 - I can integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.

Writing: Text Types & Purposes, Production & Distribution of Writing, Research to Build & Present Knowledge and Range of Writing
5 W 1 - I can write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
5 W 2 - I can write informative and explanatory texts to examine a topic, conveying my ideas and information clearly.
5 W 3 - I can write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
5 W 4 - I can produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
5 W 5 - With help, I can develop and strengthen my writing by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
5 W 6 - With help, I can use technology to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others, and I have sufficient keyboarding skills to type a two-page document in a single sitting.
5 W 7 - I can conduct a short research project that uses several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
5 W 8 - I can recall information from experiences or gather in-formation from print and digital sources, I can summarize information in notes and finished work, and I can provide a list of sources.
5 W 9 - I can draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection and research.
5 W 10 - I can write routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames to suit a range of tasks, purposes and audiences.
 
Speaking & Listening: Comprehension & Collaboration, Presentation of Knowledge & Ideas
5 SL 1 - I can engage in a range of collaborative discussions on fifth grade topics and texts, building on the ideas of others and expressing my own ideas clearly.
5 SL 1 - I can summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats.
5 SL 3 - I can summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence.
5 SL 4 - I can report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically, giving details to support main ideas or themes, and speaking clearly at an understandable pace.
5 SL 5 - I can include multimedia components and visual dis-plays in presentations to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
5 SL 6 - I can adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, using formal English when appropriate to task and situation.
 
Language: Conventions of Standard English, Knowledge of Language, Vocabulary Acquisition & Use
5 L 1 - I can demonstrate a command of the conventions of English grammar when writing and speaking.
5 L 2 - I can demonstrate a command of English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
5 L 3 - I can use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
5 L 4 - I can determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases at the fifth grade level.

6 RL 5 - I can analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza fits into the structure of a text and aids in the development of the theme, setting, or plot.
6 RL 6 - I can explain how an author develops the point of view of the narrator or speaker in a text.
6 RL 7 - I can compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text.

6 RI 8 - I can trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not.
