District Report Card

Ohio State Report Cards Released

On Friday, September 14th Ohio school districts will find out how they performed during the 2017-18 school year. What’s new: An overall letter grade for each school and school district, a feature school officials have long anticipated.

The report cards will also evaluate school districts on several standards — achievement, literacy, graduation rates, among others — on an A-F scale. It’s a similar assessment used for last year’s report cards. Other new features on the report cards this year include grades on how well schools are helping non-native speakers learn English, stopping chronic absenteeism, how students perform on retaking state end of course exams and more.

Frustration has surrounded recent report cards, in which school leaders have blamed poor scores on a number of changes.

Among them:

• Ohio switched to a new standardized test by Partnership for Assessment for Readiness for College and Careers, or “PARCC,” during the 2013-14 school year. State officials abandoned the highly criticized tests and issued a new test provided by the American Institutes of Research.

• Many school districts have shifted from paper-and-pencil tests to online tests for the first time.

• The grading scales for many state standards have changed in the last few years.
