Successful Staff In-Service Day for MLS

On October 14th the Monroeville Local School District held an all day staff in-service program filled with activities and information to assist teachers in working to improve student academic performance. The St. Joe principal and teachers also joined the Monroeville staff in working toward this common goal.

The day began with a brief district update given by Monroeville Superintendent Moore and then preceded with district Curriculum Director, Sherri Parent, presenting on the subject of RTI (Response to Intervention). RTI is an initiative whereby academically at risk students are identified early by their teachers and then referred to a team of school professionals who work with the classroom teacher and parents to prescribe interventions specifically targeted to eliminate barriers to learning. RTI is a research based intervention process that has been implemented with great success at districts throughout Ohio.

Other topics of the day consisted of:

Literacy Shifts and Text Dependent Questions (constructing assessment questions that depend on students reading and understanding written text)

Math Skill Progression Expectations (expectations, gaps in skills/knowledge, what should students leave the class with)

Science Concept/Skill Progression (what is expected of students, what gaps in learning exist in skill/knowledge, what is promised when they leave the class)

English and Social Studies (rubric exemplars, defining terminology/vocabulary)

Finally building principals discussed the most recent student state test results with staff working to identify strengths as well as areas of needed improvement in student performance. The next scheduled 2hr Delay for staff professional development is set for Wednesday, Nov. 11th.
